That's a real, meaningful lift, not a marginal one.
Here's the catch that doesn't make it into most "add a video resume!" advice: no major ATS has a field for a video file, and none of the parsing technology covered in our ATS guide can extract anything from one. A video can't be keyword-scanned, can't be searched by a recruiter filtering candidates later, and most recruiters skimming dozens of applications simply don't click through to watch one, even when a link is provided.
The honest trade-off
Video helps in exactly one situation: a human is already looking closely at your application and the role genuinely benefits from seeing you communicate — sales, customer-facing roles, presenting, teaching. It does essentially nothing for the earlier, automated stages most applications actually pass through first.
The pattern that actually works
The emerging, evidence-backed approach isn't "video resume instead of a document" — it's a blended approach: a standard, parser-friendly PDF or DOCX resume, which does the structural job of getting through automated screening, paired with an optional video or personal-website link for the human reviewer who reaches that stage. The document remains the primary artifact; video is a supplementary enhancement for the moment a real person is already engaged, not a replacement for something a machine needs to read first.
The practical takeaway
If you're in a communication-heavy field and applying somewhere that explicitly welcomes it, a short, well-made video alongside your CV is genuinely worth the effort. If you're hoping a video resume will help you get past automated screening, it won't — that's not what it's built to do, and no format change fixes a problem that happens earlier in the pipeline.
